🐾 5 Signs Your Dog’s Collar Isn’t Comfortable (and How to Fix It)

As dog owners, we all want our pups to be safe, happy, and comfortable. Collars are an everyday essential — they hold ID tags, clip to leads, and are required by law when out in public. But did you know thatĀ an ill-fitting or poorly made collar can actually cause discomfort, stress, or even injury to your dog?

Here are 5 signs your dog’s collar might not be working for them — and what you can do to fix it.

1. Scratching at the Neck Area

If your dog is constantly scratching or pawing at their collar, it’s a major red flag. This could mean:

  • The material is rough or irritating
  • The collar is too tight
  • There’s a tag or buckle rubbing the wrong way

Fix it: Choose a collar made from soft, skin-friendly materials. My handmade collars use high-quality webbing and soft linings designed to reduce irritation and keep your pup itch-free.

2. Loss of Fur or Red Marks

Noticing fur loss under the collar or red, sore patches? That could be caused by friction, allergic reactions, or pressure from a tight fit.

Fix it: Make sure the collar is snug but not tight. You should be able to fit two fingers comfortably under the collar. Also, opt for breathable, lightweight fabrics — no stiff, plasticky materials!

3. Your Dog Tries to Wiggle Out of It

If your dog seems desperate to take off their collar or acts differently when it’s on, it could be causing discomfort or anxiety.

Fix it: Pay attention to when they resist — is it a new collar? A specific buckle? Sometimes, a wide, heavy collar is too much for smaller breeds. A properly sized, comfortable, and stylish collar that suits their build and personality can make all the difference. You are able to customise the width of the collar and change the hardware to reduce the weight.

4. Noisy Tags or Hardware

If the collar jingles loudly with every step, it can be overwhelming for some dogs — especially those who are noise-sensitive.

Fix it: Try flat, riveted ID tags or add a tag silencer. I also offer collars with secure, low-noise hardware that won’t rattle with every shake this is an addition that can be added to your collar when I make it.

5. Your Dog Just Seems Uncomfortable

Sometimes it’s not obvious — they might move differently, lie down less, or seem distracted on walks. Trust your gut. You know your dog best!

Fix it: Switch things up. Try a collar made with love and thoughtfulness — not mass-produced. Every dog is different, and a personalized fit or softer fabric could be exactly what they need.
